The harbour at Lindos was already old when Rhodes Town was founded in 408 BC. Ships put in at St Paul's Bay and the northern bight for a thousand years before the three older cities of the island agreed to build a new capital at the northern tip. Lindos, Ialysos and Kameiros were the ancient triad; only Lindos kept its sanctuary in continuous use. The Doric temple of Athena Lindia crowns the acropolis, rebuilt around 300 BC after fire destroyed its predecessor. Beneath it, cut into the living rock, a trireme relief from the second century BC still marks the stair, carved to honour the admiral Hagesander. The sea route matters because the land route is young. For most of the island's history the 47 kilometres between the capital and the southern sanctuary were covered by water, not road. What survives is layered rather than singular. Byzantine chapel, Hellenistic stoa, Crusader curtain wall and Ottoman minaret occupy the same acropolis, and the village below preserves captains' houses from the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries, their courtyards paved in chochlakia pebble mosaic. UNESCO inscribed the medieval city of Rhodes in 1988; Lindos remains a protected archaeological settlement in its own right, which is why its lanes stay closed to cars. Sailings from the capital fall into two families. Coastal cruises track the eastern shore toward Lindos itself, pausing at swimming stops in sheltered bays. Longer crossings run north-west to Symi, whose neoclassical façades at Gialos and the monastery at Panormitis form a different itinerary altogether.
