The rock above Lindos has carried a sanctuary since roughly 300 BCE, and sailors approaching from the north still see the same silhouette that Rhodian merchants used as a bearing. That vertical mass of limestone rises 116 metres above a double-lobed bay, and the sea route beneath it remains the oldest way to arrive. Faliraki Harbour sits about 30 kilometres up the same eastern shore. Long before the resort strip existed, this coast was a working seam of fishing coves and coastal watch points, its shallow inlets sheltered from the meltemi that scours the island's western flank. Snorkelling here reveals seagrass meadows of Posidonia oceanica, a protected species that stabilises the whole shallow system. Sea caves, swimming stops and the Kallithea thermal springs coastline all belong to the same shelf. Lindos itself resolves slowly on approach. St Paul's Bay opens as a near-circular basin with a mouth barely 30 metres wide, and above it the Knights of St John raised fortifications in the fourteenth century over the earlier Doric temple of Athena Lindia. The whitewashed village below dates largely to the Ottoman and captains' era, its cobbled lanes and hoklakia pebble mosaics laid by shipowners who grew wealthy from precisely these waters.
